Jordie Lane to star in the Australian premiere of Grievous
Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons Room 8 and AT Management are proud to announce that the acclaimed theatrical concert, Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons, will premiere at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre on 20 July.
Celebrated Australian performer Jordie Lane is set to tackle the role of the man who, to this day, is hailed as the patron saint of alt-country and roots.

“Gram was everything you wanted in a singer and a songwriter” Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones
Tickets are on sale now via Ticketek. Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons tells the fascinating story of the original cosmic cowboy who lived fast and died young.

The creative force behind some of the most important recordings of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Parsons pioneered country rock with The Byrds’ Sweetheart of the Rodeo, schooled the Rolling Stones in American roots music, created The Flying Burrito Brothers and recorded two classic solo albums, GP and Grievous Angel, with his musical protégé, Emmylou Harris.
Gram Parsons was just 26 when he died, overdosing on morphine and tequila. His death, and the bizarre theft of his body by his road manager and its subsequent burning in the desert turned Parsons’ life and music into a legend.

Jordie Lane’s connection to Gram Parsons runs deep. He wrote much of his latest album in Room 8 where Parsons died, and even released one of Gram’s songs I just can’t take it anymore.

“Gram Parsons has been a huge influence over my journey as a musician,” says Jordie Lane. “He inspired me to not let genre stereotypes get in the way of making good music. It’s a great
honour and privilege to be playing him on stage.”

Australian songstress Clare Reynolds has been cast to play Emmylou Harris. With an empathetic band behind them, they will enact the story of Gram’s life, punctuated by his heartfelt songs including Love Hurts, That’s all Right Momma, Streets of Baltimore, and over a dozen more hits.

Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons is written and directed by Michael Bate, the last man to ever record an interview with him (in March 1973, six months before he died). The theatrical concert gives a unique insight into Gram’s thoughts and passions on life and music, as expressed in his final interview.

“All the Gram Parsons books, films and tributes have been told from the outside looking in. We never heard Gram’s voice, his version of events,” says Michael Bate.

“So I decided to write a theatrical concert and tell the story through Gram’s own bloodshot eyes. Some of the script is based on the interview from ’73, some is an imagining of events in Gram’s life.”

After a successful tour of Canada and the East Coast of America, Michael is thrilled to be working with Jordie Lane and Clare Reynolds on an Australian production.

Venus Fire – single launch!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 15, 2012 by speakertv

The Sound’ is the new release from Venus Fire, the new art-pop project of Melbourne-based songstress Hayley Clare. It oozes charms and has killer vocals, recorded with producers Tommy Spender (Kimbra,Offcuts) and Steve Schram (Little Birdy, Eagle and the Worm).

Released with the support of Arts Victoria, the song features a dirty funk piano riff offset by shimmering strings and sing-along chorus, revelling in Hayley’s feeling of artistic rebirth. “The Sound” is about the author’s tumultuous relationship with music, but it could just as easily be about the confusion, fear, hope and elation of any relationship.

The best part is Venus Fire are launching their single on Sunday June 3rd at The Workers Club for only $10, plus you get support acts Sugarcraft and Texture Like Sun.

‘The Sound’ is available now from digital stores including iTunes, or

We love the great people at Modular, because they encourage amazing artists like this and bring them together for our merriment.

This coming May, Modular are flying out two of their brightest young things from the UK to premiere their live show to an Australian audience for the very first time, alongside an act set to release one of the year’s breakthrough records.

Tom Vek and Kindness will be making their debut voyage across the pond joining Jonathan Boulet for a mouth-watering triple bill.

After a 5-year hiatus, in 2011 Tom Vek followed up his acclaimed debut LP ‘We have Sound’ with album #2. Spawning the singles ‘Someone Loves You’ and ‘Aroused’, ‘Leisure Seizure’ has seen a great return to form from the multi-instrumentalist Brit and it’s a real treat to have finally wooed T.V down under for the first time.

Meanwhile, Kindness is the recorded work of Adam Bainbridge and bears the fingerprints of no specific scene, no particular country, no certain era. It’s pop music but it’s slippery and enigmatic, sounds slick yet underground. Critics are calling Adam “The new Prince of bedroom pop” (Mojo) and his debut album ‘World, You Need A Change In Mind’ (co-produced with the Grammy Award winner Phillipe Zdar – Cassius / Cut Copy / Phoenix) has been winning fans the world over including tastemakers Erol Alkan, The Chemical Brothers and Soulwax since its release in March. One hugely successful SXSW later and we’re now EVEN MORE excited to see this emerging star at work. New single ‘House’ is out now.

Completing the triology is homegrown hero Jonathan Boulet. ‘This Song is Called Ragged’ is the current single taken from his forthcoming album – ‘We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart’ [out 8 June] and follows the Triple J approved pre-single ‘Trounce’. Jono will be swapping the Opera House for the Tower of London straight after the tour as he jets off to Europe for a 2-week blitz. X-FM’s Mary-Anne Hobbs is calling the record her “album of the year”, so with that kind of heat it looks set to be a big 12 months ahead for the Sydney man.

So, here’s the information you need to make sure you get your hands on the hottest ticket in town!

The east coast tour kicks off at The Hi Fi, Melbourne [24 May], before taking over Brisbane hotspot The Bowler Bar & Tempo Hotel [25 May] for a special 2-leveled all night affair. The Modular marathon concludes in fine style at Sydney’s Opera House [26 May], with an exclusive performance as part of contemporary music and arts festival Vivid Live. After the honour of curating the entire line-up for last year’s Vivid event, Modular boss Stephen Pavlovic has again assembled an inspiring bill reflecting the current crop of talent coming through the Modular Records stable.

Tickets are now on sale!

Thu 24 May – The Hi Fi, Melbourne

Fri 25 May – The Bowler Bar & Tempo Hotel, Brisbane /

Sat 26 May – Opera House [Studio], Sydney

The Ruminaters

Have a listen and then read on

If you found yourself raucously singing along to lyrics you aren’t yet familiar with, then you are going to want to know more about The Ruminaters . That was their latest track ‘Timmy’ which was released on 9 March this year. It was the first song written by the band and tells the tale of a misunderstood character who is chased out of town due to his necrophilic actions.

The Ruminaters are a collaborative four piece that play “beatnik, barnyard, hillbilly swamp rock”. With varied influences from The White Stripes and Black lips to The Strokes and the Clash, The Ruminaters play feel good tunes with an energetic and nostalgic feel.

Since their formation in 2010, The Ruminaters have gained a strong reputation for their reckless and rowdy live sets, with Triple J and indie community radio showing great support for their single ‘Deadstuff’.

The Ruminaters are set for a busy 2012 with continuous recording and touring planned – watch this space and keep an ear out for that jangling soulful rock.
