BUCHANAN Debut EP ‘No Photo’ out now…

Posted in Music with tags on June 27, 2011 by speakertv

With comparisons to Phoenix, Mumford & Sons and Band Of Horses, Buchanan is the coming together of the unabashed melodies of Josh Simons (vocals, keys) and the sweeping instrumentation of Jon Bara (guitars). The Melbourne based band burst on to the scene with a 5 star review for their debut single ‘Teachers’ from Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill, which in-turn earned Buchanan the winning spot on the Triple J Laneway Festival competition.

“Nice choice Triple J Unearthed” TWITTER @DoctortriplejPM. Independently released through Inertia, Buchanan’s debut EP ‘No Photo’ showcases the bands ability to weave classic pop melodies with progressive rock arrangements. Conceived from a song writing session in Victoria’s Safety Beach, the EP combines the talents of Simons and Bara, the pair proving the perfect songwriting compliment for one another. Simons bringing his ‘80’s inspired melodies to Bara’s progressive arrangements for a fresh take on melodic-rock. Having spent the first part of the year in good company with the likes of Gypsy & The Cat, Kimbra and Tim & Jean, Buchanan are showing no signs of slowing down as they get set to support Papa Vs Pretty and Jinja Safari on a run of Melbourne tour dates. Buchanan’s debut EP ‘No Photo’ is now available through all good record stores and iTunes. Catch Buchanan supporting Papa Vs Pretty, Saturday 25th June at The Northcote Social Club and Jinja Safari Saturday July 23rd at The Corner. PHRASE: THE LEGEND OF BABYLON

Posted in Hip Hop channel with tags on June 20, 2011 by speakertv

It’s customary for an artist on the promo trail to talk up (or big note) how progressive their new album is. But in the two years since Clockwork floored the hip-hop world, Phrase — aka Melbourne MC Harley Webster — has completely ripped up his past by the roots. Babylon, his third album, throws down the gauntlet to any musician feeling hemmed in by a scene and longing to paint a bigger picture.

Accustomed to dropping his rhymes over loops and breaks, this time around Harley did way with all samples and penned songs from scratch on guitar. He found himself leaning to the raw, desperate delivery of Australian garage rock and British mod, and so enlisted a producer, Tony Buchen, with a similar aesthetic, to take the demos to the next level. The result is a soulful, edgy album that’s screaming to be heard with full live band.

First single ‘Apart’ (available digitally today), sets the stage for Babylon.  A garage stomper with rockabilly guitar twists and a chorus sung by You Am I’s Davey Lane, the track laments a chaotic, hungover relationship.

Rest assured, Babylon retains Phrase’s trademark acerbic insights. While he’s drawn on some vintage genres when structuring the songs, on the verses he’s re-imagined the vocalist as rapper back in the day, emerging with a flawlessly blended sound that’s startlingly unique. Artfully designed to jack up your adrenalin, these tracks hum with tremolo guitar, Farfisa and Hammond lines. The choruses (so epic they must be carved into the side of a mountain somewhere) feature gutsy vocals from an unlikely crew of special guests including Jimmy BarnesSparkadia’s Alex Burnett and Guineafowl— and Harley singing, for the first time, himself.

While Harley’s spin on life can be derisive, his delivery aggressive, there’s always a chink of light shining through that signals the possibility of redemption. “To me,” Harley concludes, “‘Babylon’ means a place of beauty and getting to a better point in life. That’s what the record represents.”

Phrase’s new album Babylon is out August 12, 2011, through Marlin Records/Universal Music Australia.

August 14th: Bateau Hotel, Central Coast, NSW – free entry, afternoon Performance

Their debut album ‘War On Time’ heralded success that cemented Angelas Dish as a band to watch.  Track ‘Soft November’ taken from the album peaked at #17 on the ARIA singles chart and #1 on the AIR chart, with the video being #1 most requested on Channel [V].

They have toured heavily around the country taking in several festivals (Make Poverty History, Pushover, Soundwave, Cometogether, Strikeback) and supports for the likes of Jimmy Eat World, 30 Seconds to Mars, Anberlin and Copeland to name just a few. 2011 sees Angelas Dish return in force, with their brand new single ‘Crash’ and video clip in toe.

Hailing from Australia’s Central Coast, four piece Angelas Dish have delivered an album that is both intricate and expansive.  A brilliant mix of haunting lyrics and honest reflection, ‘Walk Into The Sky’ is comprised of tracks with intense build ups, a driving beat and guitar sounds that vary from dirty to soaring in a heartbeat

With two years between albums, Angelas Dish spent majority of 2009-2010 in the studio working on the new offering.  The break between albums reflects a new maturity in their songwriting, finding their own sound and owning it.

“It’s honest to the point of being vulnerable, there’s a youthful edge. To me it captured the moments where we found ourselves as a band, as musicians and as songwriters”(Michael Harris).

Angelas Dish are brothers Mick Harris (lead vocal) and Josh Harris (guitar & vocals), Peter Clarke (bass) and Chris Allison (drums).

To produce the album the band looked to good friend Sonny Truelove, it was important for the band to have someone on board that understood where the band had been, but more importantly where they were going.  Teaming up with renowned US producer/mixer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Incubus’ Make Yourself, Story Of The Year’s The Black Swan and The Constant), the partnership delivered a new depth of soundscape to the Angelas Dish recordings.
