EARTH HOUR UNPLUGGED AT MELBOURNE ZOO IS BACK IN 2011 WITH CLARE BOWDITCH AND JESS McAVOY

Another year, another Earth Hour, another great reason to visit the Melbourne Zoo. On Saturday March 26, the Melbourne Zoo will play host to its third year of Earth Hour Unplugged, this time with the loveable Clare Bowditch and band with support from Melbourne’s Jess McAvoy.

Instead of sitting in darkness at home, grab your family and friends, arm yourself with a jam-packed picnic basket and get ready to be enlightened on the grassy knolls surrounding the Zoo’s bandstand for some amazing music.

This year, the Melbourne Zoo and Earth Hour Unplugged will be graced with the wonderful Clare Bowditch and band performing live. Bowditch is beautiful, talented and has sold tens of thousands of albums, thrilled us with her work for over a decade and not only won our hearts but won an ARIA. She’s one of Australia’s most gifted and respected musicians, artists and singers, known as much for her “voice” as for her singing. Clare’s sense of community is well noted, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the community, who surrounds her in her live shows. Clare’s eight-piece New Slang band, are a rare and marvellous sight and to catch them at full-stride, you’ll need to rally to the Melbourne Zoo for the Earth Hour Unpluggedfor one very special concert.

Jess McAvoy has been playing in pubs and clubs in Australia since she was 16 years old, attracting rave reviews for her emotive and energetic performances and melodic hook laden indie/pop tunes. Since relocating to Melbourne in 1999, Jess has played shows with both local and international artists and has garnered national airplay on Triple J and Rage. For her latest release, Jess worked with Marty Brown (Clare Bowditch, Art of Fighting) for her CD ‘As The Sun Falls’ which was launched to a sold out crowd in Sydney and Melbourne.  The addition of Jess McAvoy to the Earth Hour Unplugged line up, opening for Clare Bowditch solidifies a great night of music and entertainment and all for a great cause!

In over 360 cities and towns across the world, Earth Hour sees people switching off their lights for an hour from 8:30pm to raise awareness about climate change, which is exactly what the Zoo is going to do. Keeping up its reputation as a conservationist Zoo, a portion of the ticket price is put towards carbon-offsetting the event and to the conservation of its inhabitants.  Stepping up their efforts in sustainability and contributing to a more sustainable Earth, the theme this year for Earth Hour is to go ‘beyond the hour’ and to make a difference not just on March 26th but the rest of the year.

The organisers of Earth HourWWF-Australia, say that this year Earth Hour will focus on broader aspects of sustainability, giving everyone something to do beyond the hour of darkness. “We’re asking people to go beyond turning off lights and instead make an Earth Hour resolution to start something bigger,” said Mr Bourne, WWFAustralia’s CEO.

“Switching off your lights is a great first step, but your true environmental impact is much bigger than just your energy bill. Your environmental footprint is made up of things such as the food you eat, the transport and housing you choose, and the goods and services you buy.”

Gates open at 5.30pm, music will kick off at 7.00pm. Selected wildlife viewing until 7pm. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on the evening. Due to changes in Liquor Licensing laws in Victoria, this is no longer a BYO alcohol event. No glass and no smoking, please.

SATURDAY MARCH 26TH

Lights out from 8:30-9:30pm.

Tickets go on sale on March 1 through www.zoo.org.au or 1300 ZOOS VIC. Limited tickets will be available at the gate.

For more information about the event visit www.zoo.org.au. To measure your carbon footprint, visit www.earthhour.org.au.

DR. DRE’S “I NEED A DOCTOR” VIDEO FEATURING EMINEM

The music video for Dr. Dre’s song “I Need A Doctor,” featuring Eminem & Skylar Grey has arrived.

Directed by acclaimed film director Allen Hughes (Menace II SocietyBook of Eli), the seven and a half minute film includes private home video footage from Dr. Dre in a retrospective of his life and career as well as a spectacular car crash that totaled a real Ferrari Modena.

“This is a very unique song, very personal and groundbreaking so when I first heard the track I knew it was something I had to do because I like to do things that are different and innovative,” said Allen Hughes. “Besides knowing Dre for 20 years, I felt compelled to do this as a fan and as a connoisseur of popular culture I wanted to be a part of this event because it’s from the last album that a large amount of people will listen to from beginning to end.”

“I Need a Doctor” is the second track from Dr. Dre’s forthcoming third and final solo album, Detox. Dr. Dre, Eminem and Skylar Grey recently performed the song for the first time on the Grammy Awards and the track debuted at #1 on iTunes in the US.

Dr. Dre began his career creating groundbreaking music as a member and producer of renowned hip hop group N.W.A. His two solo albums which followed, The Chronic (1992) and Dr. Dre 2001 (1999) are two of the most influential and essential hip hop albums of all time. Among the artists whose music Dr. Dre has produced are Eminem, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 2Pac and 50 Cent. He has won six Grammy awards including Producer of the Year in 2001. In 2008 Dr. Dre co-founded with Jimmy Iovine , Beats by Dr. Dre, the enormously successful high-performance headphone and sound transmission company.

CONRAD BIZJAK TAKES OUT THE SPEAKER TV UNCAP WHAT’S INSIDE: LIVE ART-DESIGN CONTES

Posted in Art/ off the wall with tags , , , , , , on February 24, 2011 by speakertv

It was a game of literal quick draw when Speaker TV played host to a live design exhibition during the St Kilda Festival. Only one point separated the top three designers in the ‘Uncap what’s Inside’ competition, with top honours going to Conrad Bizjak’s Loving the Sound of Summer entry.

Arts had two hours to hand-draw their design on a blank poster using only Sharpie markers and the themes of Music and Summer for inspiration. “Music, fashion and art are at the heart of what Speaker TV, so we are always up for unearthing more artistic talent,” says Speaker TV director Ivan Gomez.

“The artists came from all walks of life –the winning designer Conrad has a love for street art but his day job is head designer at creative media agency Big Dog. Second place getter, Faust, can only be described as a true design junkie and Rachee Renee, who

came in 3rd, has been brightening streets, alleyways, warehouses and galleries throughout Melbourne for some time.”

The winners enjoyed cash prizes, Kangol and exacto products, and instant fame with their works gracing both the Desktop Magazine online and Speaker TV media channels.

Speakertv.com is a web-based program for music lovers who share an insatiable passion for fashion and art. The show delivers relevant, up-to-the-minute, cultural content, profiling the bands and brands that are dragging pop culture into the future, covering what’s hot in the studio, on stage, in the club and on the street.

RED INK ON THE ROAD and NEW SINGLE ON THE WAY

Posted in Uncategorized on February 24, 2011 by speakertv

After exploding onto the scene last year, RED INK have been climbing airwaves and tearing the roof off festivals and venues with their loud hook-laden rock. While preparing to unleash their next single, ‘What My Friends Say’, the band head out on the road to play a string of special shows along the East Coast.

The tracks
‘Audrey’, ‘Battlescars’ and ‘Catching a Killer’ have all received national airplay and media attention. RED INK played over 100 shows last year – alongside Biffy Clyro, Miami Horror and British India to name a few. The year of touring cemented them as the ‘one to watch in 2011’. “Watch” being the operative word. Having packed venues across the country as well as hyped guerrilla performances and festivals such as Peats Ridge, Playground Weekender, Hot BBQ and many others –RED INK are a band you can’t look away from.

The latest single isn’t too far away. ‘What My Friends Say’ is a clear step in the right direction. It captures the infectious energy of the band onstage, whilst offering a depth in song writing. The band’s lyrics weave a tale of heartache and confusion which is directly juxtaposed with angular and driving musicianship. Already a hit amongst their audience, the song is now destined to explode out of radio speakers. Listen out for it soon.

RED INK play the QV Summer Series in Melbourne’s CBD on February 26, Monash University Caulfield on March 2, AlumbraBar in Brisbane on March 3, Stones Corner Hotel in Brisbane on March 4, Beach Rd Hotel in Byron Bay on March 5, Deakin University Waterfront in Geelong on March 10, Moomba Festival in Melbourne on March 15 and The Hills Are Alive Festival in Gippsland on March 26. See below for full list of dates and ticketing information.

BLISS N ESO ANNOUNCE RUNNING ON AIR MAY/JUNE NATIONAL TOUR

Posted in Uncategorized on February 23, 2011 by speakertv

It’s been speculated about for months, and now its official – Bliss N Eso are taking their explosive live show on the road for their biggest ever Australian tour. After what was without-doubt their biggest 12 months ever, with a #1 ARIA debut, a platinum album, international touring, headlining slots on some of the country’s biggest festivals and main stage Big Day Out performances that blew tens of thousands away.

The trio are renowned for their spectacular audio-visual live experience that has set a new benchmark in the genre, and they promise that this will be their biggest and best tour yet, stepping up their already-extravagant live production in what will be one of the largest scale tours from an Australian act in years.

Off the back of their Facebook competition to decide their route through regional towns, they’ll be setting up makeshift venues to cater for demand in locations like the courtyard of Old Mt. Gambier Gaol and Coffs Harbour Showgrounds generally only used for festivals. All dates will be supported by Sydney’s soaring Horrorshow and Big B (USA).

With their last four tours selling out, them being one of the biggest acts in the country and still keeping the ticket price under $50, this tour sure to sell out in a heartbeat. Anyone that’s seen Bliss N Eso in the flesh will know that this is an absolute must-see, but the boys love the art of surprise – so nobody knows exactly what’s in store for the lucky thousands that get their hands on tickets.
