I, a Man – Nugaze is here.

Posted in Music, Rock'en channel with tags , , on October 30, 2010 by speakertv

Melbourne can get very cold during the winter. After coming home from long days at work most people’s ideal situation is to then turn on the heater, turn off their brain, sit on the couch and watch something like Two and a Half Men.

Melbourne four-piece I, a Man however, spent this time going through the teething process of starting a new band. Relentlessly cutting their songs to pieces and rebuilding them in the process of creating a sound all of their own. These long winter nights where then coupled with long summer days when the band finally stepped into Melbourne’s iconic Sing Sing Studios to record. It was the contradiction of these two settings that helped push I, a Man’s songs into a unique place where the chaotic, the controlled, the uplifting and the disorienting all live hand in hand. These tracks were saved and until the current Spring when the band recently headed into Hothouse to add another four tracks, which will be mixed over the summer and released in the new year. Its anyone’s guess as to what this winter has install for the group… most likely touring their debut EP.

If you want to hear the forthcoming EP tracks you can catch I, a Man at Lucky Dip Cup Eve, Monday 1st November

Featured War of The Walls Artist:

DJ Prequel started his love for DJing at age 15. Since then he has been active on the Melbourne club circuit as well as international supports including People Under The Stairs, De La Soul and Ugly Duckling. In 2009 Prequel travelled the country on the Big Day Out tour with Paris Wells  performing in Sydney, Perth, The Goldcoast and Melbourne as well as Melbournes St Kilda Festival and Big Right Hook Festivals.
2010 is proving to be a big year for Prequel playing the support for Method Man & Red Man and Hot BBQ. Prequel is a keen crate digger with an ear for Rare Groove, Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop and everything in between. Expect to hear him bring the party with his ever-growing record collection.

Iowa – From the Melbourne Underground

Posted in Music, Rock'en channel with tags , , , , on October 28, 2010 by speakertv

Emerging from Melbourne’s fertile independent underground scene, Iowa’s music is a union of contradictions: lo-fi but widescreen, balancing tight-as-a-drum songwriting with expansive solos, hanging sheets of noise on surprisingly hummable hooks. What comes naturally is a sound that draws on the distortion-drenched dynamics of forebears like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, but remains very much Iowa’s own. The band is also made up of a bunch of my favourite musicians from various other bands that were kicking around Melbourne when I was out a gigs every night….

The band’s initial studio sessions have already borne plenty of fruit with the impending release of a double A side 7” on their own label Desert Mouth Records. The recordings were made with rising super producer Jack Farley, a man who’s had his hands all over just about every great record that’s emerged from Melbourne’s underground scene in the last couple of years, including releases by Beaches Love of Diagrams, St Helens and Spider Vomit. Farley plugged straight into the band’s aesthetic, capturing the sound of the trio in their natural environment playing live and loud with every song recorded start to finish in a few short hours.

AVAILABLE NOW – On sale at shows and online at

You can catch Iowa’s new wave grunge at Revolver Monday November 1st at Speaker TV’s Lucky Dip.

Day 1

Hope all is well. After leaving at 6 am this morning from Melbourne airport the Fashion Journey crew (with loaded up cars) took to the roads bound for Eden, with all intentions to get there by 4 pm. After starting off an hour and a half late due to road problems and traffic we were finally on the road ready to trek across the road. Arriving in Moe in time for a late breakfast we were well on track to getting to Eden on time. We found a beautiful landscape with a backdrop that was taken up by the Alpine mountains to do our first shot in (we shot Borsha in a field, which apparently was previously inhabited by wild boars, sadly, the boar had passed on). After three incidents with what is now roadkill, two stops, and nine hours on the road we managed to finally make it to Eden where we were keen to find somewhere to shoot. Photographers Fil & Trav managed to find somewhere to shoot  that was immaculately beautiful and overlooking the Eden port (we shot all of Harvest Powell here, in this lovely couple’s home). After dinner (local Fish & Chips) we decided to go on a midnight rampage shoot (which is where we shot all of No Tomorrow) with a narrative storyline of a mean killer stalking his prey and getting exactly what he wants, which leads us up to right now.

We are waking up tomorrow at 5 am and please feel free to change my words.

Until tomorrow…

Day 2:

Another 6 am start saw  leave Eden in the tracks and start to make our way to Sydney. With a quick breakfast stop at Bega, which to our surprise (and delight) has a very nice Gloria Jeans we were set for a long travel onto Sydney! The “rat race city” was a fair way off but we were intent on making it to the great city very early so that we could utilize the great weather to our best advantage. After a brief stop for re-fueling we were fortunate enough to see an amazing church in Boalla, which had an amazing history as volunteers Gloria & Ken told us, we decided that the infrastructure was too good to pass up! Here we decided to turn our cars into temporary “get-ready stations” and shoot Identity clothing’s tee’s, and following the amazing history that this building had had, mixed with its religious contribution made sure we that someone upstairs was looking down on us!!

After our brief trip we kept going on the trek towards the harbor-side and as the hours drove past we grew closer and closer until finally we arrived at our goal destination. After checking in at Pyrmont we made our way down to Darling Harbor to shoot brands Mina & Katusha (shot in-front of the opera house) and Violet & I (shot in-front of the Sydney Harbor bridge) just as the sun had set. All and all we had a good day and tomorrow is panning out to be a busy one, so for now we must rest up, and get ready for the busy day ahead.

more coming soon:)
