Lupe Fiasco rocks Melbourne Zoo

Pretty much the most underrated hip hop star, Lupe Fiasco, will follows up his recent Big Day Out visit with a national tour including a monster show at the Melbourne Zoo.

We already had a sniff of Lupe, him being announced for next year’s Playground Weekender, but he promises shows for Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, accompanied by Melbourne MC Phrase and burgeoning Adelaide act Lowrider.

So we get lucky, sure. But Melbourne gets the luckiest of all. The zoo have been presenting wine-and-cheese artists at Zoo Twilights, and Eddy Current rocked the wild animals last summer.

Now Lupe brings his witty and wise rhymes to the wilds of… Carlton… on Australia Day 2010 for the first instalment of the Sound Safari season.

Phrase and Lowrider will be there too but the Sound Safari event will be far bigger than that. Jazz-hop party monster True Live and afro-beatmasters Diafrix will also be on the bill, warmed up by a new sci-fi soul project from Katalyst and Steve Spacek dubbed Space Invadas.

Add DJs M.A.F.I.A. and Mat Cant, monkeys, giraffes, elephants and snakes, and it’s fit to be a weird and wild show. Tickets for all shows go on sale next Friday from 9am.

Incidentally, Lupe is also preparing a new album called Lasers and expended many a pixel clearing up misconceptions about it on his myspace.

It won’t come out this year, it doesn’t have a release date, it’s not his last album, and he didn’t sell out by doing a song for the New Moon soundtrack.
